Last month, Saudi Arabia banned celebratory gunfire at weddings.
(Yup. Last month. Celebratory gunfire. At weddings. And don’t think “drunk Kentucky uncle single shotgun blast,” think “multiple AK-47s fired dry.”)
A lot of the kingdom’s more, er, traditional tribes have a problem with this. And so, to underscore the reasons behind the new law, circumstance jumped into ironic action:
“At least 25 people have been killed in a wedding in eastern Saudi Arabia … celebratory gunfire brought down an electric cable at a house in Ain Badr village where the wedding was held on Tuesday night … the blaze erupted inside a tent, killing at least 23 women and children.”
Al Jazeera has the whole terrible story. Also, MASSIVE CULTURAL COGNITIVE DISSONANCE.
